Q:Are diet drinks harmful to a developing baby?

A:I'm guessing what you're really wondering about is aspartame, the artificial sweetener that makes your soda "diet." Aspartame is broken down in the stomach and intestines into methanol, aspartate, and phenylalanine.

The American Pregnancy Association, citing the US Food and Drug Administration, notes, "aspartame is safe for use during pregnancy and lactation. It is recommended to limit consumption to a moderate level."

Only women with a rare disorder called Phenylketonuria (PKU) would potentially have difficulties with aspartame during pregnancy.

So go ahead and keep sipping your diet drinks, but in moderation. Remember water is the best drink for your body—and for your developing baby.
